About Us

Our Beginnings

(DSC) Disability Services Corporation was founded in 1960 by a group of parents who recognized the need for a local organization dedicated to helping their children with special needs.

Our Early Efforts in Advocacy

Honig, California Superintendent of Public Instruction vs. Doe, et al

Before the passing of EHA in 1975

This case had an effect on special education in that it ensured a free  appropriate public education to all students, specifically those with  behavior-related classifications.  By a Supreme Court ruling confirming  the language of EHA ensures that public schools cannot make decisions on  the education of special education students without parent or guardian  agreement.  In addition, it also set the future provision in IDEA  establishing manifestation determinations after 10 days of student  suspension.

Spreading the News

In the 1970s, we focused on addressing the needs of special education teachers in the specific area of Learning Disabilities. This was facilitated each year with a state conference.

These workshops afforded the opportunity for educators to get the latest up-to-date information.

Moving on in our mutual quest for inclusion

Through the 1980's and 1990's our focus continued in the area of learning disabilities. More and more the need to expand these services into upper education became apparent.  In 1995 the ADA helped to complete much of the needed legislation to help safeguard and support the disability community.

Seeking to fill gaps in the support structure

In the 21st century, we began to re-examine the role and function of the organization to ensure that it aligns with our original vision and mission.

Some factors came to the forefront toward meeting needs in the neurologically disabled community:

  • Testing of functional levels for adults returning to the classroom
  • Creation of spaces devoted to socialization and therapy
  • Establishment of a dual diagnosis AA group to address the issues of substance abuse in the neuro-disabled community.

Housing with a 360 degree approach

Currently, our organization foresees a massive need for members and their care giving families to have affordable housing. But upon deeper research, we see a need for communities designed to offer a safe and understanding place to call home—not just for school-aged people but the entire age range up to and including senior citizens with special needs.
